Winter Projects

The most problematic aspects of trailer sailing learned so far mainly concern launching and retrieving. I wanted to focus more in the sailing aspects next year so some big changes are on the cards on the road equipment.

For guiding the boat and trailer around sometimes limited access road to slipways I figured a front ‘push’ type towbar would be useful but this would be a permanent fixture to the vehicle. So I was thinking along the lines of stepping up to a 4×4 to make sure any future trailer upgrade would still be within the limits allowed by the vehicle.

Secondly the roping out procedure and subsequent roping in, taking someone’s advice I added an electric winch to the list of upgrades. With this a superior BS line would accompany the kit again to keep well within the limits.

Included in winter projects this year

  • Change car up to a 4×4
  • Fit a front ‘push’ type towbar
  • Purchase an electric winch and make a mounting bracket
The new chariot, a Toyota Prado SWB.
Managed to get the last towbar made by the now defunct Western Towing
Fitting was easy
The only thing visible once the removable towbar is unpinned and removed is the receiver.
Home made winch mount
I want the winch to be mounted on one side of the towball so I can winch the trailer right up to the towball
