I made several trips up the Lune between 2021 to 2023. Here’s a few photos from those visits.
An interesting afternoon sailing with the tide from Glasson to Lancaster
The river wends is way up towards Lancaster the same way or has for millennia. The Romans used it, the Vikings, traders and fishermen for hundreds of years have passed this way.
The old docks, warehouses, abandoned when deeper ports became more important and ships went elsewhere to load and unload, have been taken over by housing developments but the historic docks and merchant houses remain.
I stopped for a short break at the alehouse ‘Snatchems’ where in times gone past, men were press ganged into the crew of cargo ships.
When the tide turns its time to leave or risk getting beached until the next tide.
Timed that about right, any later would have rushed being unable to get back onto the trailer safely.
