Plan for Completing Trailer Mods

It’s been a busy couple of weeks and not had much time to work on the trailer. But I’ve had a few thoughts on what direction the next phase will go. Firstly I’ve been looking at the existing supports and where they contact the keel and it seems the overhang is no more than any…

Day #3 Shut

Been grinding the ends of the frames today to get the parts to fit closely, followed by grinding each side of the proposed butt joints to form a vee for the weld followed by initial welds. I’m using 0.8 gauge flux cored stainless steel MIG wire as this will resist corrosion. I’m thinking of coating…

Day #2 Cut

After deliberating on what cuts to make, where, and what to end up with, work begins. I decided to keep the end brackets more or less intact and reposition at the revised trailer end.

Winter Project: Trailer Mods

Starting the job of trailer mods. Looking at the back of the trailer you can still see the mud it picked up from Dove Point a few weeks ago. This happened when the trailer went down the steepest part of the slip but hit the flat bottom of the channel before Tarka was full able…

Coniston The Last Launch Of The Year

Visited Coniston Sailing Club this weekend for the last sail of the season. Chance to try out a different slipway. Had a good sail there but because I didn’t want to hold up any of the other crews launching that day I went back of the queue. This meant added delays getting started so my…

Boarding Step

We have an old wooden ladder that we use to climb aboard when Tarka is on its trailer. It’s pretty old but a couple of things going for it are the solid ash rungs which each have a wire strenthener to prevent breaks, that and the two leather protective patches that I added to help…

Derwent Water

Second sail of the year, getting back into the routine after a year out of action. Never been to Derwent before. What I found was an efficiently run sailing club inforporating a substantial boat hire centre, workshops, quayside mooring facilities and assisted launch capabilities. The mooring is limited to stern-to Mediterranean style so a boat…

Gaffers Gathering at Port Dinorwic

Tarka joined a group gaff rigged traditional wooden boats gathered in the inner dock in Port Dinorwick this weekend. A short break at an OGA organised event including lift in and out, mooring, music, food, drinks, a steam engine and live band entertainment. We moored next to some much larger vessels including one pictured here…

Anchor Cradle

This post documents the building of a cradle to support a new second anchor for Tarka. The main anchor is a 7.5 kg bruce pattern attached to 50ft of 8mm chain. The bruce is good for mud and sand. This second anchor, a 10kg admiralty bay palm, will be better for rocky and or weedy situations.…

Docking Arms

Considering the roughness of the sea at Meols the other day has given me some ideas about adding some extra control to keep the boat oriented in the best way possible. The rear of the trailer has some stout box section that could be used as a fixing point for some vertical guides. I’ve cut…
