Oiling Topsides and Summerhouse

Been busy polishing metal with brasso and oiling topside with Danish oil this week. I’m rubbing the oil in with some 320grit wet and dry to re establish an even surface. The mixture of oil and ground dried oil from previous treatments helps to fill in any open imperfections in the surface. Temperature have soared…

Taylors Oven Polished

And ready to back into the boat. I suspect it’s the first time it’s been out for a deep clean so should be good for another 25 hears or so. After pressurising I’m leaving it for a while to see if there are any gas leaks between the tank and the isolator valve.

Painting Complete

With painting the hull complete the next job is refit the Taylors paraffin cooker and check that’s working OK. New pressure pump washer arrived last week and fitted so that will need testing once everything has been reconnected.

Painting Ongoing

What with the weather being ideal this week I had expected to be finished painting by now but stuff gets in the way and with one thing and another I’ve ran out of time. I’ve taken my time to prepare the surfaces at least and given the bottom a sand and inspection, the boot line…

Repainting the Hull

Might as well take advantage of all this fine, calm weather and repaint the hull. Oiled the topside last week that is now dry and it’s safe to sand the paintwork. Paint dust is a lot easier and quicker to wash of with water when the oil has dried and is no longer tacky. Once…

Raincoat Repairs

With fine weather window continuing and my leg still healing I’m taking a week off my regular work with the ONS to, well work on repairs and preparations for the coming trip to SDG. The rain cover will be off for a week at least so that gives me time to put some small tears…

Oiling the Brightwork
Next week or so weather forecast is dry and warm. Ideal for oiling brightwork and repaining the hull. Painting was last carried out two or three years ago so it’s about time. Toplac is a one part paint that’s fine for day boats and since Tarka lives mainly on a trailer the bottom will be…

Water Pump Checks, Engine Test

While I had the floor up I checked a few items that need regular maintenance. The water pump pushes water into the exhaust pipe for cooling purposes. Checking the grease pot. Taking the access plate off to check the condition of the pump impeller and checking the water inlet filter. Checking the speed log impeller…

Repair to Bilges

It was a niggling issue and one that ultimately I decided to fix before it got out of hand. Some of the epoxy outer layer of the bilge on either side of the keel had become damaged and allowed water, oil and paraffin to get into the woodwork discolouring the wood and threatening the integrity…

2025 Getting off to a slow start
Sailing season is starting, but I might miss the first few sailing opportunities, reluctantly, since I’ve recently been suffering from acute leg pain caused, it had been suggested by a doctor, by using them too much. Especially the right leg since that one hurts more, worse when I lie down. So for this year’s laying…
