When I started to get into sailing I was fascinated by the language, being someone who has spent his career in computing, coding languages are the thing that holds everything together and makes it work. But it’s the programmer that makes sense of it to mould it into something useful. Boats are the same in a funny kind of way. Every part of the boat and it’s equipment has a name and a specific job. It’s the boat builder that understands it and puts it together to make it work. Boats on the other hand are physical objects that will degrade over time. David Moss built this one and I am honoured and privileged to be the custodian of his work. It’s my responsibility now to ensure every part is maintained and repaired where necessary. Like this big lump of wood i.e. the rudder. It looks like it’s been underwater a long time and the water has got in. The sides have parted in one or two places so it’s my job to rake out the loose bits and repair using wooden slips, epoxy, clamps, chisels, sandpaper etc.

One small patch required here

The masts and spars, sticks as my wife calls them, have been stripped, sanded and oiled.
